Let's Talk Color!
Genetics can be complicated, partially because geneticist are still looking to locate and isolate specific traits we know exist, but cannot test for (i.e.graying/fading/irish spotting).
*I will touch on Fade at a future date.
Genetics, is one of my favorite parts of (behind the scene) my breeding program. I can easily forget to switch
from thinking bb (Tyrosinase Related Protein 1 (TYRP1)) to brown. Then Brown is the correct terminology, BUT many breeds(ers)
and families use the term Chocolate, and if you have an Aussie (AussieDoodle) this will be referenced as Red. Brown/Chocolate/Red are
ALL visually the same pigment its read as: Gene/Tyrosinase Related Protein 1 (TYRP1) with is the pigment of black or brown on the B
locus. I find preferences in speaking in both Locus & correct terminology, but will also use breed/breeder/terminology.
Let's back up...and start simpler:

We cannot test for Irish Spotting sisi. However, she is visibly Irish Spotted, Not to be confused with Psuedo.

^^So genetically she should be visible tan point (atat or ata). But.... The E locus shows ee, which is recessive red. Recessive red does NOT allow for Tan points to be visible.

- if she was "Ee" or "EE", Miss Bernedoodle would be a Black/Rust/White Traditional Tri.
-Pared with Bb or bb brown pups would be produced.
-Paired with a kyky atat EE would produce 100% tan pointed puppies.
---kyky ata would have the potential to have 25% solid pups "aa"
---Ee paring would produce 75% recessive red
---ee pairing 100% recessive red.
--KbKb paring 0% visible tan points. Kbky 50% visible
---Kbrky Brindle Pointed Tan Points.
- ALL "ee" BERNEDOODLES DOGS SHOULD BE TESTED FOR MERLE prior to breeding (whether you plan to breed to Merle or not). "ee" HIDES MERLE

Kbr (DOM) = Brindle
KY = Pattern Expressed from A Locus

Ay = Sable
aw = Agouti
at = Tan points
a = Recessive Black
The Sable (ay) is introduced into Bernedoodle coat genetics from poodle gene pool.
When looking at a puppy, Sable will have darker tips and be lighter towards the roots. As you can see with Teddy, the lightness in his undercoat is shinning through. After being clipped the darkest hairs only tend to continue by their ears. Giving the dramatic dipped in ink appearance.
Pro tip:If you are looking for a Tri or phantom be sure to make sure that puppy is not sable. A sable puppy may appear to less experienced breeders as Tri's,there is no such thing as a "Sable Tri". Sable is dominant to tan point.
Any tan points sable pups are born with will disappear quickly.
All sables will "clear", but this is different than the Fade/Graying gene. However, a sable may both clear and fade.

Gene: A unit of heredity; a segment of DNA or RNA that is transmitted from one generation to the next, and that carries genetic information such as the sequence of amino acids for a protein.
